6.1″ Huawei Ascend Mate and 5″ 1080p Huawei Ascend D2 officially Announced

6.1″ Huawei Ascend Mate and 5″ 1080p Huawei Ascend D2 officially announced, headed to China soon, Huawei just unveiled the Ascend Mate and Ascend D2 as part of its CES press conference. That’s hardly surprising, since these two devices have been leaking like crazy recently, and we did hear on numerous occasions that the trade show in Las Vegas would be the venue for their official introduction.

With the Ascend Mate, Huawei is taking the phablet segment to a whole new level. The 6.1-inch touchscreen makes this more of a tablet than a smartphone. Then again, that’s the same thing that many were saying about the original Samsung Galaxy Note back in 2011, and that went on to invent a new mobile device category and was sold in the millions. So who knows, maybe Huawei’s new offering will have the same fate… or maybe not, and it will just be a strange niche device.
  • The Huawei Ascend Mate has a 6.1-inch 720×1280 HD IPS+ touchscreen
  • 8 MP Rear Camera With HDR
  • 1 MP Front-Facing Camera
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz Processor
  • Pentaband HSPA
  • Dual-Antenna design for a 20-30% increase in network coverage compared to the Competition
  •  A 4,050 mAh battery
  • It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is just 6.5 mm thin “at its narrowest part”
The Ascend Mate comes with the highest screen-to-body ratio in the industry: 73%. That’s right, 73% of this device is screen. The display comes with ‘Magic Touch’ support, meaning it can be operated even with gloves.
This device comes with Huawei’s Quick Power Control and Automated Discontinuous Reception technologies, which apparently help a lot in terms of battery life. Huawei claims that the Ascend Mate will easily last two days of “ordinary usage” on one charge. Furthermore, it can charge 30% faster than other mobile devices too.
The Ascend Mate will become available in China in February in black and white. No word yet on when or if it will make it to other countries or territories.
While the Ascend Mate is clearly more of an experiment, the Ascend D2 will be Huawei’s flagship smartphone for the next period.
  • The Ascend D2 comes with a 5-inch 1080p Full HD IPS+ touchscreen (with 443 ppi pixel density)
  • Gorilla Glass protection
  • A 13 MP BSI rear camera
  • A 1.5 GHz quad-core processor
  • A 3,000 mAh battery
  • It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • It’s 9.9 mm thick, it weighs 170 grams
  • And it’s water and dust proof
  • It has an aluminium body and a metal frame
As with the Ascend Mate, the D2 features Huawei’s power saving technologies that improve standby time by up to 20%, as well as the fast charging which makes it have a 30% advantage over other mobile devices in terms of charging time.
The Ascend D2 will be out in China later this month, and in Japan at some undefined point in the future. As for any other countries or territories, hang tight – we’ll bring you news as soon as we get it. The launch colors will be blue and white, and intriguingly there will also be a 4.7-inch version of the Ascend D2. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted.
