Sony intros Xperia Z Ultra with Snapdragon 800 CPU, and SmartWatch 2

Sony has officially announced two new Android products: a very large, and a very small one.
First, we’ve got the long-rumored Sony Xperia Z Ultra. As expected, this is a 6.4 inch phablet that runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. It’s dustproof and waterproof (IP58), being “the first smartphone ever to incorporate a Full HD TRILUMINOS Display for mobile powered by Sony’s latest X-Reality.”

The Xperia Z Ultra also Features:
  • Quad-Core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor
  • LTE
  • NFC
  • 8MP rear camera
  • 2MP front-facing camera
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal memory
  • 1.6 inch, 220 x 176 pixels display
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • MicroSD card support
  • The Xperia Z Ultra weighs 212 grams
  • Run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • waterproof (IP57) design
  • And is only 6.5 mm thin – according to Sony
  • This makes it “the world’s slimmest Full HD smartphone”
  • It will be available globally starting the third quarter of the year, in white, black, and purple
There’s no word on pricing, but I’m sure it will (at least) match the price of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note III.
Sony says that “as of 24th of June 2013, outside of Japan, the Xperia Z Ultra is the only waterproof smartphone with a Full HD display on global distribution.” However, since the new Xperia isn’t available to purchase yet, and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Active will certainly be released in various markets around the world (it’s already out in some), the Japanese company’s statement isn’t quite accurate.
And here’s a video explaining the TRILUMINOS Display technology
The second new Sony product announced today is the SmartWatch 2. Like the company’s first SmartWatch, this is a wearable accessory that acts as a second screen for your Android handset, allowing you to answer and make calls, take photos, and remotely control your phone – all from the watch’s 1.6 inch, 220 x 176 pixels display. Featuring a waterproof (IP57) design, NFC and Bluetooth 3.0, the SmartWatch 2 will be launched in September (for an unknown price).
