How To Make WhatsApp (and perhaps other apps) compatible with Multi Window on Samsung devices

Everyone knows how cool Multi Window is. For those who don’t, Multi Window is a feature on Android running Samsung phones that allows two apps to share a screen simultaneously. This means being able to send texts while browsing YouTube, or surfing the internet while scrolling through Facebook simultaneously. Originally intended for the Note II, this feature was also introduced to the original Note, Galaxy S III and other devices as part of the ‘Premium Suite’ with the 4.1.2 update.

Take this with a pinch of salt though. The only apps that are compatible with Multi Window right now are pretty much the ones that come with the phone, and a very, I repeat, very few other apps. If you’re someone like me who constantly uses Whatsapp, you’ll know how annoying it is to close a YouTube video you’re watching to reply to a text. Then, when you go back to the video, it decides to buffer all over again. Thankfully, there’s a solution to this.

If you follow the steps given below, you can get Whatsapp to work with MultiView.

1. Open Whatsapp. Click settings, Backup Conversations.

2. Uninstall the version of Whatsapp you have currently. This won’t work unless you do.

3. Download the modified .apk of Whatsapp here.

4. Run the .apk and install it.

5. Follow the normal setup procedure, and Ta da! You now have a fully functional Multi Window compatible version of Whatsapp running! Also note that you don’t need to root your your device.

If you’re into a bit of developing yourself and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, then you can actually make any app compatible with Multi Window!
