Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 go on sale. Android 4.2 update now rolling out for Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus

Today is Nexus day, so to speak. Google’s new Nexus 4 smartphone (made by LG) and Nexus 10 tablet (made by Samsung) are slowly becoming available to order from Google’s Play Store in the US, the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, and Australia. In the US, the new hardware will be up for grabs starting at 9 AM PT, so in less than two hours.

Elsewhere, the Nexus 4 got sold out in the UK in just 30 minutes. At the moment, both devices appear to be in that situation in Europe and Australia (and you can leave an email address to be notified when they’re back in stock). Of course, the same may happen in the US of A.

Google has also started selling a $20 bumper for the Nexus 4. The reason for this accessory’s existence has nothing to do with weak signal issues – that was what the iPhone 4′s bumper case was supposed to fix. In this case, it all has to do with the fact that the Nexus 4′s back is also made out of glass, like its front. Which means that it’s more prone to breaking than other handsets which don’t use glass on both sides. This, ironically, makes it similar to the aforementioned iPhone 4 and its 4S successor.
The Asus-made Nexus 7 with 32 GB of storage space and mobile data connectivity should be out today too, though demand for that particular model is understandably smaller than for the brand new Nexus 4 and Nexus 10.
Along with the availability of its new devices, Google has started pushing a software update to the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10. This is still Android 4.2, of course, but the version is now ‘final’ (as opposed to the unfinished software pre-release devices have been running so far). This brings with it support for lockscreen widgets, as well as multi-user support on tablets – two of the main features of Android 4.2.
Furthermore, the update to Android 4.2 seems to be already rolling out to some Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Asus Nexus 7 units. The build ID is JOP40C, and if you’re impatient there is a procedure for manually downloading it from Google’s servers and getting it onto your device of choice – it’s all detailed here for the Galaxy Nexus and here for the Nexus 7. Only a Galaxy Nexus bought from the Play Store can be updated at this point – keep that in mind.
