Sony CEO Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the company’s flagship Android
smartphone, Xperia Z, will be launched by a US mobile carrier soon. The
confirmation came during All Things D’s D11 conference.
Since we’ve seen a T-Mobile-banded Xperia Z passing through the FCC in early May, it’s hard to believe the fourth largest US carrier won’t be the one to sell the handset.
Of course, Sony is already selling the Xperia Z in the US, but only unlocked, for $629.99.
The smartphone is one of the world’s first to come with a waterproof case and high-end Features:
AT&T should also carry a new Sony smartphone soon: the Xperia ZL. Although similar to the Xperia Z in many ways, the ZL isn’t waterproof, and is slightly smaller.
Sony may have shipped more than 4 million Xperia Z units around the world (as of April). Kaz Hirai did say that sales were going well, but didn’t provide exact numbers. In any case, it’s clear that there’s demand for high-end waterproof smartphones – and this is why Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S4 Active in the near future.
